About Us

Singing Women of Texas is an organization of Christian women whose ministry through music spans the entire state of Texas and around the world. Members are comprised of church staff, church choir members, music educators in schools and universities, and any woman who professes Christ as her Savior and who loves to sing. The Panhandle chapter is a ministry centered in Amarillo. The members come from churches all over the Panhandle, from as far south as Silverton to as far north as Perryton. The Panhandle Chapter has never wavered in its commitment to present the gospel of Jesus Christ through music and testimony. God has faithfully provided an abundance of opportunities for us to sing and bring His message to the world. We have performed for churches, community gatherings, nursing homes, hospitals, and prisons in the Texas Panhandle and on mission trips to other states. The future is bright for the Panhandle Chapter as we look forward to new opportunities and challenges for our ministry throughout the Panhandle of Texas and around the world in the coming years.

Our History

The Singing Women of Texas (SWOT) was founded in 1994 to celebrate the Texas Baptists’ Music Division’s 50th anniversary. Fourteen groups across the state were sent music and prepared to present the one-time concert in Waco at the annual Texas Baptist Music Convention. Over 300 women came to Waco to perform with Singing Men of Texas and by themselves. But SWOT did not die there. At first, five chapters saw opportunities for service and kept singing, and now Texas Baptists sponsors eight chapters spanning the state. In 2019 the group celebrated the 25th anniversary of that ministry. As a combined choir, SWOT has been featured at Texas Baptist Annual Meetings, Baptist Church Music Conference sessions, and the Alleluia! Church Music Conference. They have sung and shared the gospel across the United States, including tours to New England, Colorado, and the southeastern states. In Summer 2017 SWOT chapters met together for “Mission Texas” and ministered to homeless women and women in prison in San Antonio and Lubbock.  In summer of 2024, five of our members were part of the over 100 Singing Women of Texas to travel to Washington, D.C. for a series of concerts and mission activities.

What does being a Texas Singing Woman Entail?

Typically, each chapter meets once a month for an afternoon rehearsal and an evening concert at a local church or venue. Often two or more chapters come together for a music-mission trip or a special concert event. Members have relatively limited joint rehearsal time and master music on their own with aid of a CD of their voice part and their songbook. Cost of dues and concert dress vary with each chapter and is borne by the individual members.
